Francis, of the royal house of Habsburg-Lorraine, was born in Florence, within the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, in 1768, and became head of the house and Archduke in 1792 at the age of 24.
After having a sheltered up-bringing he was determined to be a strong and conservative leader of the Holy Roman Empire and Austrian territories, being profoundly suspicious of anything radica and particularly republicanism.
Francis was not, however, battle-shy and would gladly lead his troops himself in order to defend Austria and to protect the values and principles that he adhered to and believed in.
