Colonies, Protectorates and Dominions:
Your country may hold an amount of dominions, protectorates and/or colonies. These are very much similar to countries, in that they are comprised of an amount of provinces.
Dominions, protectorates and colonies all owe allegiance to a motherland country. The leader of the motherland country has direct control over said dominion, protectorate or colony.
Protectorates
If you conquer a province and wish to make it a protectorate, you can choose to add it to an existing protectorate's boundaries, or create a new protectorate from the new province (again done from Reforms). A protectorate is conquered land, in which the native population is kept (settling the land with your own people is not the main objective) and the culture is respected and not significantly affected. Due to this, your Empire gains more ethnic diversity and no instant rebellions take place, but separatists will be a problem (unless the loyalty of the protectorate is at a high level).
Colonies
If you conquer a province and wish to make it a colony, you can choose to add it to an existing colony's boundaries, or create a new colony from the new province. A colony is a conquered land, in which the main goal is to settle the land with your own population, and spread your own culture. Your own installed population will be 100% loyal, but the natives may not be (depending on various things). So long as the colonisation process is successful, no separatists shall be present.
Dominions
As the population and wealth of a colony or protectorate, you will be able to turn it into a dominion. Dominions have their own locally recruited standing armies and navies, and are more loyal. The armies shall have to be conscripted at normal cost. To create a dominion, you first have to get the rulership rating of a colony or protectorate up to 10.
It is now also possible to use a short-cut to create dominions from colonies and protectorates via the following formula:
Total Income of all Provinces x Number of Cities x (10/Number of Provinces)
In the unlikely event you have no cities, enter "1" for the number of cities in its place.
