From the Year 1800...
The French Revolutionary Wars have continued with France fighting the Second Coalition consisting of Austria, The Ottoman Empire, Russia and The United Kingdom. France has, since the revolution, captured the Austrian Netherlands (Belgium) and German city states on the west bank of the Rhine river which were acquired after battling with Prussia - and to a lesser extent, Austria - in the days of the First Coalition, until Prussia surrendered in order to resume their conquest of Poland.
France had taken Spain out of the war against them by crossing the Pyrenees and occupying Catalonia, resulting in a brief alliance between Spain and France, in which Spain and France combined their naval forces in an attempt to destroy the Royal navy, only to result in the utter defeat of the French and Spanish naval fleets.
France Occupies the Netherlands
France had also invaded the Netherlands, installing the popular Batavian Republic (which ceded territory to France) in the French model, a government which supports the French war effort.
British and Russian troops at one point attempted a liberation of the Netherlands, however it resulted in a bloody defeat.
The Battle for Egypt
French forces under Napoleon Bonaparte have occupied Egypt for a few years now, dispatching the Ottoman-controlled Mamelukes. The British fleet under Nelson destroyed the resting French fleet in the Battle of the Nile, resulting in Napoleon and his army being stranded in Egypt. Napoleon has strengthened his position in Egypt since, even though the embittered Egyptian population has rebelled once and has remained at odds with the French occupation which continues to impose taxes on them.
Napoleon has since conducted a raid on Ottoman Syria, before having to retreat due to disease amongst his men. The French have defended against a couple of Ottoman attempts to retake Egypt. Napoleon then escaped through the British blockade by boat to return to France.
The Problem of Italy
France had foremost knocked Austria out of the war by sending troops through Italy and the minor German states of the Holy Roman Empire to Tyrol on Austria's doorstep, whereby Austria and France made peace. However, Austria is once more at war with France, being a part of the Second Coalition.
Italy has been raped by French and Austrian forces from the onset. French armies, during the wars period, have advanced the entire way down the peninsular, only to be kicked out in 1799 by Russian forces, leaving Italy turned upside down, and having forced the Pope to flee from his home in Rome to take up residence in Tuscany. However, with the dawning of the year 1800 the 'Roman Republic' was toppled and the Papal States returned.
The Russians, after kicking the French out of Northern Italy, moved into Switzerland, only to be later defeated by French forces due to lack of Austrian support.
Italy remains a battleground, France being half-way to dominating Italy with the creation of the Ligurian, Cisalpine and Parthenopaean Republics. However, the French have since been kicked back over the Alps (with the exception of troops in Genoa). But now, Napoleon has taken charge of the forces.
Future Tensions?
The battling in Germany is as fierce as ever, and could go either way. The Austrian Archduke - who is also Holy Roman Emperor - himself is commanding the Austrian forces in the region, and are poised to strike on the east side of the Rhine.
