Born 1752 as son of the count palatine Frederick Michael of Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld he joined french service in 1777 quickly rising to the rank of Major General up until the beginning of the french revolution in 1789 forcing him to switch service to the Austrian Empire.
After the sudden death of his brother in 1795 he became duke of Zweibrücken, and on February 16, 1799 became Elector of Bavaria and Count Palatine of the Rhine, the Arch-Steward of the Empire, and Duke of Berg.
Married with Augusta Wilhelmine of Hesse-Darmstadt who sadly passed away in 1796 and now remarried with Frederica Caroline Wilhelmina of Baden. He therefore has close connections to the Electorates of Hesse-Darmstadt and Baden.
